As teachers, we wear many hats in today’s educational environment. We are mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, children, aunts, uncles, role models, and care providers outside of the classroom. In the classroom, students depend on us to mold them into having a successful future and being a constant in their lives. Our administration expects that we will go the extra mile to ensure that all students grow each quarter or semester with limited time and resources. Teachers adapt to wearing all of these hats daily, but we forget that our well-being depends on growing young minds.

Our well-being is always the last thing we think about when it comes to education. We forget that there are resources that can keep us on track by reflecting and focusing on us. In my classroom, I have a calming corner that displays a poster for students to refer to as having a growth mindset. We learn different coping strategies and positive sayings to help us through tough times, but we as teachers can develop this same mindset to improve our well-being.

A growth mindset is seven practices that we can incorporate into our lives that allow us to focus on developing a positive well-being. Building a growth mindset will allow us to develop healthy habits in the classroom and our personal lives. Today we are expected to go above and beyond to make everyone happy, but we need to build our own set of healthy habits to make sure we are happy first. Students will gain the most out of us when they get the best version of their teacher. I know this is something we always talk and think about, but it is time to help each other out and share what we know. Start building those healthy habits and focusing on your well-being by setting goals and taking time out for yourself.
